uc-info

A command line utility for looking up and inspecting unicode characters.

Building

This repository includes a pre-built unicode table in src/uc_table.rs. You can also build your own using the ucd-builder.php script. Passing no arguments to the script will instruct you on how to download the appropriate UCD XML file and generate the rust source files.

Usage

Usage:
  uc-info [OPTIONS] [ARGS ...]

Positional arguments:
  args                  Arguments to the selected operation

Optional arguments:
  -h,--help             Show this help message and exit
  -d,--describe         Describe codepoints (default)
  -t,--transcribe       Convert codepoints to characters
  -i,--identify         Identify characters
  -s,--search           Search for a character by description
  -h,--highlight        Highlight characters not in the current block
  -f,--file FILE        Specify file
  -B,--base BASE        Choose a number base to apply to all integers
  -l,--list-blocks      List known blocks
  -b,--block BLOCK      Consider only a named block or range as start-end
  --ascii               Consider only the ASCII block
  --ascii-ext           Consider only the ASCII extended block
  --emoji               Consider only the emoji block

Examples

Describe a codepoint:

$ uc-info 0x2584
▄	0x2584	9604	LOWER HALF BLOCK

Transcribe codepoints to a string:

$ uc-info -t x68 x65 x6c x6c x6f
hello

Transcribe binary codepoints without prefixes:

$ uc-info -t --base 2 1101000 1100101 1101100 1101100 1101111
hello

Identify characters:

$ uc-info -i '“naïve”'

Highlight non-ascii characters. Imagine this looks the way you think it would. Github markdown doesn't have any abilility to highlight characters.
