cowin-checker 💯💉

TL;DR This script automates the tedious process of looking for open slots in multiple locations. It filters and shows available slots for a given pincode or district upto 3 days. It is targeted at technical folks who want to monitor Cowin for their non-technical loved ones.

Story

By sheer luck I was able to book an appointment for my first dose. Many of my friends and relatives have been trying for days but couldn't book their slots before it got over in minutes. I had nothing to tell them than that I will keep looking and let them know if I find anything.

So I started checking once in a while, but the Cowin website does not have a great UX. It does most things decently, but doesn't do some basic things such as filtering out or sorting so that available centers would be shown first. This means that for every lookup we have to spend time scrolling through the list to find open slots.

I had a few people from different parts of India who needed vaccines, and if I wanted to look for all of them, it would take a considerable amount of time, not to mention I have to keep in mind the exact requirements for each person and do the filtering in my head.

That's why I came up with this, spent an evening and this is the result so far. My vision for this is for it to be a useful tool for any developer to support their loved ones who are looking for vaccine slots, while not being a big time sink. UX is a priority and we might see a better cli for adding and managing requirements.🥳

Sooo that's it. If you like it hit the star so you can find it again easily. If you used this and it helped you find a slot for your loved ones, please write about your experience in the issues section!! ❤️ If you think anything needs improvement, feel free to create an issue and we can discuss on it. If anyone wants to contribute to the code, they are most welcome to, after discussing on the issues list.❤️

Initial setup

If you don't have Node.js installed already, please follow any article on google on how to do that.

Then install dependencies using

npm install

Then open the config.js file and modify the locations array as per your requirements. For the type field, you can use "district" or "pincode" as shown below. Then correspondingly provide the districtId or pincode. Give a suitable title to identify each location in the output. Filters are explained in the next section below.

locations: [
    {
      type: "district",
      districtId: 304,
      title: "Kottayam, Kerala",
      filters: [available, covaxin, above18]
    },
    {
      type: "pincode",
      pincode: 382475,
      title: "Hansol (382475)",
      filters: [available]
    },
  ]

Filters

Filters can be used to setup rules to filter each location request. The items in the array are applied in an AND fashion. e.g. [available, covaxin, above18] means available and covaxin and above18. Code for filters is in filters.js and it is straightforward. Listing them here,

  • available
  • dose1
  • dose2
  • above18
  • above45
  • covishield
  • covaxin

Running

Run the script using node index.js. Note that the script does not auto refresh, you will need to re-run to get latest data.

Improvements

  • Search for multiple days (for 3 days now)
  • Modular and dynamic filters
  • Split code into smaller modules

Steps To Run the project from your mobile phone

You can run the project in your mobile phone as well. You do this by basically first installing a terminal emulator and then then executing the project from the terminal. the steps are:

Steps

  1. Install f-Droid app from f-Droid. In the world of opensource apps, this one acts as the manager. Meaning that it'll help you to install the correct version of an opensource app that's compatible with your phone. It's kinda like the playstore for opensource apps.

  2. Install Termux app from f-Droid Easy enough step. Do take care that u don't download or update this app from playstore.

  3. Open the Termux app and type in "pkg update && pkg upgrade" This ensures that the packages are uptodate.execute this as often as you like and esp. after installing a new package.

  4. Now terminal is ready. To install cowin-checker, execute "pkg install node","pkg install git"

  5. Execute "git clone https://github.com/johnjacobkenny/cowin-checker.git"

  6. Execute "cd cowin-checker"

  7. Execute "npm install"

  8. Execute "node index.js". the results will show up on the screen.

  9. If you want to see the files in Termux, you need a special file explorer app (If phone is not rooted). For more on that https://wiki.termux.com/wiki/Sharing_Data Google "Termux sharing","File Explorer",etc

Notes:

  1. If there is any package that I forgot to mention, or is needed for you , Termux will ask you to install it and give you the commands to do just that. Its very friendly like that.
  2. There are a lot of tutorials available in youtube for Termux. You can use that if you run into issues. But don't blindly run any code that they say as there a lot of malicious "tutorials" targeting Termux noobies.

About

This script automates the tedious process of looking for open slots for multiple districts/pin codes. It filters and shows available slots for a given pincode or district upto 3 days. It is targeted at technical folks who want to monitor Cowin for their non-technical loved ones.
