Currently extension supports browsing the repo and opening the current repo either in binder or github itself. It would be useful to be able to clone the repo in current working directory or user defined directory.

This would be an awesome feature!

Implementation-wise I'm wondering if it would have to somehow interact with the jupyterlab-git extension.

I can imagine having a downloadFolder configurable with repositories being cloned to an owner/repo subfolder.

Git clone (as a is available in the https://github.com/jupyterlab/jupyterlab-git as an button added to the file browser.

There are some interesting discussions that we could have about how to make these two extensions interact
