If the error only occurs in the GMRES example, I think we can temporarily disable it with XL builds until determining the path forward |

1d2a09a addresses feedback from #1095.
2cc1485 fixes #1121 - see build no. 348 for the cuda-9 test results and build no. 31 for the XL test results.
