Removing the
.gitignore
is making maintenance on the Autotools build impossible. (Ok, not impossible but really annoying.) I think this has to stay until we also delete the old build.My understanding is that this wasn't deleted for technical reasons, in that nothing here interferes with the CMake build. Rather it was done to promote the new build. @mwoehlke-kitware can you please confirm?
(At some point, we should probably decide if or when we want to delete the old build, but I think that's a separate PR.)
