Gatsby CETEIcean Workshop

This repository was created for the TEI Conference and Members' Meeting 2022 workshop Building TEI-powered websites with static site technology. A hands on exploration of the publishing toolkit of the Scholarly Editing Journal. Updated in 2023 for the TEI-MEC Joint Conference workshop Introduction to publishing XML with static site and front-end technologies. Updated in 2024 for the ADHO Digital Humanities Conference workshop Introduction to publishing XML with static site and front-end technologies. A hands on exploration of the publishing toolkit of the Scholarly Editing Journal.

This is a simple Gatsby site showcasing some uses of the libraries gatsby-transformer-ceteicean and gatsby-theme-ceteicean.

To keep things simple, this template uses JavaScript (as opposed to TypeScript) and CSS imports. For a more sophisticated use of these tools, look at the Scholarly Editing Micro-Editions Template.

For the purposes of the workshop, the main branch has an incomplete project (with commented solutions) for attendees to work on. The complete template is in the complete branch.

Usage

Make sure you have the latest Node JS LTS installed. Then install with:

npm i

And run the site with:

npm start

Examples included in the complete branch

For the purposes of the workshop, the main branch has an incomplete project for attendees to work on. The complete template is in the complete branch.

Basic Gatsby principles

  • plugins configuration: gatsby-config.js
  • querying data from GraphQL
    • querying siteMetadata for metadata and a navbar: layout.js
    • querying TEI data loaded by gatsby-transformer-ceteicean to build a TOC: index.js

Shadowing gatsby-theme-ceteicean

  • defining a simple React component for a TEI element: Pb.js
  • mapping (routing) TEI elements to default and custom React components: Ceteicean.js
  • React component with state management and component composition: Note.js
  • React component as above with TEI DOM lookup: PlaceName.js

Verovio

  • integrate Verovio in a component via useEffect and add some interactivity through state management: Verovio.js

DocBook

A simple DocBook example showcases how the CETEIcean plugins can be used with other non-TEI XML formats.

Applying TEI transformations

Transformations can be queued pre- and post- processing by gatsby-transformer-ceteicean. They are processed before ingestion into the GraphQL layer.
