Implements issue #9.
This works in Python 3 apart from the web server support, that needs a port of webnsock as well as some changes to other code (even doing the basic port of webnsock I was getting security related exceptions in the web.py framework). Since I don't use the web server parts I have little interest in spending more time on that.
