Sure. The audio idea is very similar to the image matching tables - only this time you listen to an mp3 file instead of an image and, say, write down the word you hear.
I have tried using phonemic code in gap fill tables (using the font package X-sampa) but it does not seem to like it. I got round this by creating an image of the phonemic transcription.
Being able to match text to audio files and use X-sampa for IPA in gap-fill tables would be very nice for us language course designers.
