Requires matrix-org/matrix-js-sdk#4172 and element-hq/synapse#17104 (end-to-end tests will fail until the Synapse PR gets merged and the docker image gets updated)

Part of element-hq/element-meta#2317

The end-to-end test fails due to depending on a Synapse PR that hasn't been merged yet, but other than that, this PR is ready for review.

Would it be possible to separate out the removal of the old UTD-hiding code into a separate PR? This is a bit of a big change otherwise.

Somewhat wondering if we couldn't just set msc4115_membership_on_events: true on the default template, rather than have all this copypasta.

Would it be possible to separate out the removal of the old UTD-hiding code into a separate PR? This is a bit of a big change otherwise.

Agreed. The old UTD-hiding code breaks the playwright test because it, of course, hides the undecryptable pre-join event. It also means that people won't see any change.

If we want them as separate PRs, we could:

  • first rip out the old UTD-hiding code, then merge the new code
  • first merge the new UTD-hiding code without the playwright test, then rip out the old UTD-hiding code and add the playwright test
