This is akin to matrix-org/pipelines#157, but using GitHub Actions.

I'm fairly certain we cannot use the action here since we need the fallback behavior?

The fallback looks to work from the CI output. From the code it appears the same-named branch stuff should work as well.

As you said, I don't think fallback behaviour is possible with actions/checkout.

Heads up $GITHUB_HEAD_REF is only set for PRs, though I think this is fine as probably will want to test release-* and develop branches against Complement master anyhow.

I saw that, but don't we only run builds for PRs anyway?

There's also $GITHUB_REF, but I don't think that returns the information I need.

If you check the top of the workflow file you'll see that we run it whenever develop or release-* branches are pushed to:

It may be cleaner to keep using actions/checkout@v2 here and just do a full clone (fetch-depth: 0) followed by opportunistically trying to git checkout the matching branch?

@anoadragon453 Thanks! I believe I've updated this to take this into account, it now:

  1. Uses GITHUB_HEAD_REF if it exists.
  2. Falls back to GITHUB_REF (and cuts off a refs/head/ prefix)
  3. Falls back to master

A few options here:

  • Complement is tiny; cloning the whole history is less than 1 MiB. You could grab the whole history (fetch-depth: 0) and then try to git checkout the target branch, ignoring (and thus staying on master) if that fails.

  • You could stick with the wget logic you have, but might be slightly easier to instead try to call git clone --depth 1 --branch $whatever https://github.com/matrix-org/complement; then you don't have to directly muck with wget and tar.

  • If you can somehow easily determine whether the branch exists before actually cloning the repo, you could do that in one step and pass it along as the ref argument to the actions/checkouts step as an output. E.g., if a step echoes ::set-output name=branch::$whatever, then in the following steps can access that as ${{ steps.STEP_ID.outputs.branch }}

To find the right reference from either a push or a pull_request you might need to dig into events that trigger workflows, the github context, and default environment variables. E.g., for pull requests you probably want to look at github.head_ref or github.base_ref, but for pushes you probably wantgithub.ref.

All of those are also available as envvars: $GITHUB_HEAD_REF, $GITHUB_BASE_REF, and $GITHUB_REF.

Synapse 1.37.0rc1 (2021-06-24)
==============================

This release deprecates the current spam checker interface. See the [upgrade notes](https://matrix-org.github.io/synapse/develop/upgrade#deprecation-of-the-current-spam-checker-interface) for more information on how to update to the new generic module interface.

This release also removes support for fetching and renewing TLS certificates using the ACME v1 protocol, which has been fully decommissioned by Let's Encrypt on June 1st 2021. Admins previously using this feature should use a [reverse proxy](https://matrix-org.github.io/synapse/develop/reverse_proxy.html) to handle TLS termination, or use an external ACME client (such as [certbot](https://certbot.eff.org/)) to retrieve a certificate and key and provide them to Synapse using the `tls_certificate_path` and `tls_private_key_path` configuration settings.

Features

Synapse 1.37.0 (2021-06-29)
===========================

Synapse 1.37.0rc1 (2021-06-24)
==============================

- Implement a generic interface for third-party plugin modules. ([\#10062](matrix-org/synapse#10062), [\#10206](matrix-org/synapse#10206))
- Implement config option `sso.update_profile_information` to sync SSO users' profile information with the identity provider each time they login. Currently only displayname is supported. ([\#10108](matrix-org/synapse#10108))
- Ensure that errors during startup are written to the logs and the console. ([\#10191](matrix-org/synapse#10191))

Bugfixes
--------

- Fix a bug introduced in Synapse v1.25.0 that prevented the `ip_range_whitelist` configuration option from working for federation and identity servers. Contributed by @mikure. ([\#10115](matrix-org/synapse#10115))
- Remove a broken import line in Synapse's `admin_cmd` worker. Broke in Synapse v1.33.0. ([\#10154](matrix-org/synapse#10154))
- Fix a bug introduced in Synapse v1.21.0 which could cause `/sync` to return immediately with an empty response. ([\#10157](matrix-org/synapse#10157), [\#10158](matrix-org/synapse#10158))
- Fix a minor bug in the response to `/_matrix/client/r0/user/{user}/openid/request_token` causing `expires_in` to be a float instead of an integer. Contributed by @lukaslihotzki. ([\#10175](matrix-org/synapse#10175))

- Fix a bug introduced in Synapse v1.35.1 where an `allow` key of a `m.room.join_rules` event could be applied for incorrect room versions and configurations. ([\#10208](matrix-org/synapse#10208))
- Fix performance regression in responding to user key requests over federation. Introduced in Synapse v1.34.0rc1. ([\#10221](matrix-org/synapse#10221))

- Remove Synapse's support for automatically fetching and renewing certificates using the ACME v1 protocol. This protocol has been fully turned off by Let's Encrypt for existing installations on June 1st 2021. DMRobertson pushed a commit to matrix-org/sytest that referenced this pull request Sep 8, 2021
In #1115 I didn't correctly handle the situation where there's a corresponding synapse/dendrite branch to fetch. #1128 fell victim to this.

Fix: reuse the shell script from matrix-org/synapse#10160, i.e. consult a wider range of GHA's environment variables.
