I haven't implemented a fallback like in #5638 because matrix-org/sydent#170 only applies to requests to /store-invite.
I don't quite follow this logic: "I haven't fixed this endpoint in sydent". Do you mean, this bug doesn't exist for this endpoint in sydent?
