I just set the locale to German and ran an update (trying to replicate the issue) and everything is still in German. Has anyone else that uses a non-English locale noticed this issue? @nilspupils @DD4WH @gitalm @Svardsten53 ? If you run an update, does your database language revert to English? |

I have ran a brand new installation of version 0.11.1 from main and now everything looks much better!!! The pages for settings are awesome with excellent explanations what to do. Thanks! The species lists remained in Swedish after an update. After copying in the old BirdDB.txt followed by commands rebuild_db.sh and update_birdnet.sh I noticed that the English species were back in the log, NOT in the All species and Excluded species lists. I tried setting Swedish in settings again followed by Restart ALL Services and that solved it. I'm not sure if the English species were in the log after the first Update before I updated the database. I have tried to reproduce the error but still have the Swedish species in the log. When configuring the URLs in advance setting i have to use HTTP as I mentioned earlier, but that is a minor problem. I had to manually change the log URL in menu.html to HTTPS. I have not started BirdWeather in this version yet because I probably will go back to the old installation. Copying own customizations also remains. I'm looking forward to know when all planned news and customizations are implemented in the new version and will then switch to the new one. |

I have copied in my customizations and everything now looks very nice and I have decided to continue on the new release and see what happens tomorrow when the birds are awake. |

One more question here - AFAIK the cleanup deletes the longer audio files, but does not remove any detection audio "snippets", so those we will need to do something about over time as the card fills up? |

Odd. Today I didn't get the Combo image to display, and investigation showed that there was <10MB left of space on the card. I re-ran the clenaup script which fixed it. As far as I can tell, the crontab has the correct permissions: |

One other thing I found - the filenames looked all mangled when viewed from a Windows machine - and that was likely due to the use of colon in the filename. This is no big issue for me - but it would probably be a lot more userfriendly for windows users if : was avoided. |

The one issue does not exclude the other ... I haven't tried to directly read the ext4 filesystem, but I have copied the files to my NAS, which exposes them over an SMB / Samba / CIFS / Windows networking share - and as long as the filename contains a colon, it appears completely mangled on the other side (both for windows and linux clients accessing the SMB share). It is not a huge issue for me at all, I manage quite happily in the Linux space and can do mass-renames to solve it. But I do think the issue goes deeper than just SMB. Windows is not very happy about colons in file names. So if that is not an issue for the target audience, not a big problem - but could be good to be aware of. I could of course give FTP a try - but as shown below, Windows complains quickly about those filenames - and uses colons as part of NTFS file streams - https://stealthbits.com/blog/ntfs-file-streams/ Anyway - this is more for completeness than any kind of request :) |

Thank you Patrick and the rest of the team for all the work you put into this. It feels fun and inspiring to have been part of the start of this, even though I have not been so involved lately. Huge progress has really been made. As I mentioned before, I am working on getting more new users and it is of course an advantage to be able to show a product that is functional and professional. |

The pushes I just did utilize the new socket I think the RPi3 will do just as well once it finishes installing. You can do an update or a new installation and you should have the new socket running on your system 😄 |

Because I was too lazy to pick the local species, only, every update or new install. So I just tried to add all species and tested bird recognition. And then I was wondering why it doesn't recognize Eurasian wren. |

Any species that is in the
Your latitude and longitude will, for the most part, adjust the confidence score enough that species very far outside your region, (probably) won't get a very high confidence score. This is why I encourage you to leave an empty If you want to start off with a custom, localized I hope that is a bit more clear! |

I know this stuff can be tricky to say the least. To shed a little ligtht:
I had to ammend my comment because I realized that would happen to you if you used the "system" python to call the The top line in So, this means you should be able to call So, your execution, instead of looking like this: would actually look like this which itself will use the correct python installation (not the "system" python, but the one in the python virtual environment). I hope that is helpful in explaining some of the difficulty you encountered :/ |

OK, many many thanks to you: Patrick, AP and Dr. Martin! With your joint help I could manage to start the python3 script in the virtual environment. I had to understand and realize that its obligatory to specify the full path, ALTHOUGH I was already in the correct directory in Linux. (Linux is not too logical sometimes . . . ) However, although the simple script has So, for the script to work inside BirdNET-Pi, I realized that I simply had to comment the Now it works! Thanks for testing the script and sorry for the runaround - I am working on a Pi with full Raspbian install, so graphics through plt.show() are accessible. I've spent quite a while today trying to get at least passing familiarity the python plotting package Matplotlib in order to get some indication/legend for the color coding of confidence on the detections bar chart with little success so far.... getting hung up on the jargon as usual, figure/axes/axes/axis.......................... I suggest the daily phenology time chart is self explanatory (darker color higher readings) and doesn't need a legend/colorbar? Another route would be to generate charts using R's ggplot, which seems (in my limited experience) more suited than Python? That however would mean getting R in the base BirdNET-Pi installation and possibly stressing the system more..... Patrick is doing such great work slimming it down, only for me to suggest a further bloat........... Anyways, @mcguirepr89 , @DD4WH , @davidmam , @oliverk71 and the rest of the gang - we need to decide on the "graphical" face of BirdNET-Pi - the simpler chart / more detailed one with boxplot/ other suggestions would be appreciated. My thoughts would be to not use a boxplot because it is not appropriate for what you are showing. Better to use a violin plot or similar that shows the distribution of the data as a profile, rather than the quartiles, which presumes some sort of non-truncated distribution. |

I think for the scientific user (and I can wear that hat if I choose) they would not do data analysis in situ but would extract the MySQL tables and work from that. Then they have access to which ever tools they want - Python, R, MATLAB etc. The data you have is great - I don't see the boxplot adding much in the big overview. Perhaps a drilldown by species from the database view would be helpful, not on the overview page though. |

I think I may know what is going on -- Are you running an update (Web GUI update or If not, I would recommend backing up your Swedish customizations, setting the URLs in "System" > "Tools" > "Settings" > "Advanced Settings", clicking Update Settings, running an update, putting those custom files back in place, and seeing if that fixes things for you. I'm going to be working on a better system than having to update settings and then run an update to change (some) things, namely the URLs and passwords. Sorry for the inconvenience :/ I'm working on it, though |

Absolutely! It's a crappy process, which is why I changed things today. The change is as follows: For example, now when you set a "Webpage" password and click "Update Settings," it will actually update the password in the Caddyfile, and will reload caddy. Also, if you change the database password there, and press "Update Settings", it will actually change the database password automatically. This means that, unless you need an actual new feature, or need to pull in changes from the repo, you shouldn't need to run I will want to announce this change to the rest of the group as well, but it is VERY new, so I haven't gotten to it. |

I'm trying to get this running on a cellular modem instead of wifi with modest success. Everything runs except the analysis service. It records but doesn't analyse. I'll try a fresh install in the next day or so unless there is a simple thing to do to sort he analysis (a lock file or some such?) I have tried all the service restarts. Any thoughts? The log just starts up a TFlite connection then seems to hang. |

This means that the socket has restarted, but that the old process is still using the bind address. This is a temporary thing and fixes itself when the old process relinquishes control over the socket (port 5050 on the loopback interface).
Unfortunately, this "fix" was a coincidence -- 127.0.1.1 and 127.0.0.1 point to the exact same interface, the loopback interface. You can use 127.0.01 and 127.0.1.1 interchangeably. I don't know if any of that was helpful, but that is the best I can do for now. Let me know if you have any additional information and I'll be sure to provide more information. |

I've tried the update scripts. I also find I have to manually check the birdnet.conf and rerun the updates afterwards.
It's too cold to be sat outside any longer so I will play with it another day.

If you haven't tried running an update, that would be my recommendation. Then maybe a reboot. The analysis isn't related to the system being on a cellular modem, since the server socket uses the loopback interface, it isn't binding to your other network interfaces (WiFi nor Ethernet).

I cannot explain why you are seeing those links that way. When you set that IP URL, did you allow the new "Advanced Settings" page take care of everything for you (as noted in the instructions for the Custom URL section), or did you do an update right after setting the IP URL?

After running update of the forms branch via the web gui, I'm seeing what looks like an error in the syslog, and files are piling up in the BirdSongs/February-2022/11-Friday folder (till disk was full). Not sure if these are related.. Also, the 11-Friday folder was generating .wav.csv files up until like 04 am today, but then stopped. |

I think I know what is going on here. I introduced a crappy little bug the other day that secretly let the web-GUI update fail (it was restarting php7.4-fpm after updating the database password, which was killing the update in the middle). I've of course fixed this, but I'm wondering if your web-GUI update failed at the point where the database password was getting updated. If so, it may explain seeing things get backed up (since services didn't get restarted correctly, or have possibly broken). It is one of those tradeoffs we usually accept when we are playing with the bleeding-edge stuff :D No worries - trying the update now - will report back. Also getting my em-272 microphone today so excited to see how it compares to a run-of-the-mill cabled handsfree I've been using up until now. It is fascinating to see the differences between the microphones in use on the different BirdNET-Pi's - e.g. the one in South Africa seems to be turned up to high gain - or has a lot of background noise? And yours seem to have some noise on every Khz frequency. |

Mine is a $5 recycled microphone from those gaming-console rock-band styled games. It is TERRIBLE!! but was in my price range. But I totally agree with the fascination over the variety of hardware. To be honest, I've been surprised that my microphone picks up anything at all. @DD4WH Franks is the best, by far -- this thing is so awesome. I am green with envy over other users' stuff! |

I am picking up the same EM272 - but will not be providing it with that nice 9v voltage and preamp.. just using the UGREEN USB ADC for it. But still amazed at how much the handsfree has picked up so far. Oh and the update is done - and now my stream is working again \o/ |

I have some EM272 but I’m not putting them out on this! Great microphones, very sensitive with a low noise floor.
One of my installations is on the back side of the garage right next to a busy road and traffic signals so a lot of No 57 Bitterns (as the bus starts up form stationary!)
The woodland one is currently testing in the back garden so a different mix of birds and a lot less but not non-zero traffic noise. And a different microphone.
The third one in Dundee is in a friends garden but this is in a more modern house (from 1950s/60s, mine is from 1860’s) and far more ‘sterile’ gardens.

It is one of those tradeoffs we usually accept when we are playing with the bleeding-edge stuff :D
No worries - trying the update now - will report back. Also getting my em-272 microphone today so excited to see how it compares to a run-of-the-mill cabled handsfree I've been using up until now.
It is fascinating to see the differences between the microphones in use on the different BirdNET-Pi's - e.g. the one in South Africa seems to be turned up to high gain - or has a lot of background noise? And yours seem to have some noise on every Khz frequency.

I observed that the "Detected Species by Confidence" list only shows the species detected that day while the "Species List by Detections" lists all detections. @mcguirepr89 |

Did a clean install, edited the settings and rebooted, but now I cannot reach the birdnetpi via browser (wifi and internet). Both, http://localhost and http://birdnetpi.local do not work. But via SSH it is reachable. So I edited the Caddyfile manually to add http://192.168.1.6 and rebooted, but it does not work, too. What I just noticed: The caddyfile contains double information. The lines for the web terminal is two times there, for the log three times. I do not know if it was before, but it is now (after reboot). I am going to delete the double entries and reboot again. |

I did implement the fix, and haven't been able to replicate this on a clean installation from this morning. About how long after editing the Custom URLs the very first time did you wait before rebooting? |

I will put something together regarding setting those since it is obviously not super clear how it is working. Also, the installation guide shouldn't instruct you to do any reboots at that point (for installation purposes, that is). Indeed, there shouldn't be any BirdNET-Pi settings that you can change that would require a reboot. The system exception to that is changing the system locale (which is not the database language) -- you would want to reboot after generating and applying new locales for your system. |

@mcguirepr89 I found some other issues. The web terminal opens in a new window not in the frame. I do not know if this was intended this way. However, although I entered my web terminal domain for this in the settings, the page's link is being used. So, instead of https://webterminal.dnshome.de/ a new window opens and looks for https://birdnetgv.ddnss.de:8888/ which doesn't work. However, if I enter the correct link in the browser, the web terminal is being opened. At least, it tries to, but more about this later on. My birdnetpi is really slow in the moment and I do not know yet why. I switched to 3B and changed the SD cards. So, I took the SD card (running main) from the 4B and put it into the 3B. And now it is really slow. But I know my domains work in general, because they worked on the 4B. |

I think I am quite a few versions behind now, but I did have the services hang andneed to be restarted. I am wondering about putting a cron job to do the restart once a day as when it is deployed it will be about 90 mins away (45 mins by car and a further 45 mins by Mountain Bike) so I don't want to have to do inperson service. And the network looks like I cannot SSH back through it on cellular so have to be close enough to get a wifi network.

What is the recommened recording length for the 3B, now?
My answer is 30 seconds for the Raspberry Pi 3B[+]
I tried setting it back to 15 s. Just recognized that the log stands still, but I don't think the changed recording length is the cause.
Sometimes the log standing still is the web log and not the service for which it is showing output being unresponsive.
Now it's 23:52 here and the log says
23:13:07 birdnetpi systemd[1]: birdnet_server.service: Consumed 14min 35.928s CPU time.
Sometimes the log standing still is the web log and not the service for which it is showing output being unresponsive. Either way, restarting services works, but sometimes just clicking the log link again shows which of the two is having issues.
Also, you'll want to provide the context for that message in the log.
The discrepancy in the time there is because of your network, not a result of latency. systemd creates entries with system time stamps, so your log entry just shows that at 23:13:07 the birdnet_server.service reached some sort of ending (success or you failed or killed, impossible to say without context).
If I had to guess, I'd say you restarted services and saw that message, which (if my guess is correct) says you let the server service run for 14 minutes or so before deciding to restart it, but doesn't indicate anything about latency.
Just restarted services and that worked.
But restarting services works most of the time, for anything, so whatever works works

Unfortunately I cannot access it remotely so port forwarding won't help. Something to do with the way the cellular network is set up. Probably best I do the full upgrade first and see if the problem persists. That should be click the upgrade button twice - right? ..d |
