For portability, ( and IMHO), a terminal editor should not depend on xclip for clipboard.

How about an internal clipboard that doesn't depend on xclip, and uses it only if it exists?

Or a fallback tiny one

With an internal clipboard, and things like #67 and #64, we are able to use micro with no mouse and no window system.

But don't get me wrong, I dig the mouse.

Yes you're definitely right. I think it might be worth forking atotto/clipboard to add a fallback to an internal clipboard if xclip or xsel isn't installed.
