Microsoft PowerToys version

0.45.0

Running as admin

  • Yes

Area(s) with issue?

Installer

Steps to reproduce

I had the earlier version of PowerToys installed and when I used the update option to upgrade, the install failed. When I rebooted my computer, the older version was gone. I downloaded the installer from GIT but it is not working. The install launches, presents the first dialog box and then disappears.

✔️ Expected Behavior

PowerToys to be upgraded to latest version.

❌ Actual Behavior

The install launches, presents the first dialog box and then disappears.

Other Software

Hi @ssbajaj,
Could you please share the following files from %localappdata%\Microsoft\PowerToys\ in a GitHub comment?

  • powertoys-bootstrapper-exe-0.45.0.log
  • powertoys-bootstrapper-msi-0.45.0.log

The ones from the previous version you had installed might also prove useful.

Thanks Jaime. I've attached both sets of files. After the upgrade to 0.45.0 failed, I tried to reinstall 0.43.0. But that didn't work either. I do have log files for the earlier versions that were successfully installed in case you need them.

powertoys-bootstrapper-exe-0.45.0.log
powertoys-bootstrapper-msi-0.45.0.log
powertoys-bootstrapper-exe-0.43.0.log
powertoys-bootstrapper-msi-0.43.0.log

Hi @ssbajaj,
From the logs, it seems that there are some restrictions in your system that are not allowing the installer to run:

How about trying to run the installer with Admniistrator rights?
Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.

Hi Jaime,

Thanks. I tried running this as administrator but received a User Account Control error stating that the Administrator has blocked me from running this. The account I was running this from does have Adminstrator privileges. Never had this issue with any prior version of PowerToys or other software.

What can I do to override that message?

Thanks!

@ssbajaj It seems like your administrator restricted you from install software by device policy.
Is this device owned by you or it's an organization's device.
If it is an organization's device, contact your IT department for more infomation.
If not, try steps on https://support.solarwinds.com/SuccessCenter/s/article/User-installations-are-disabled-via-policy-on-the-machine?language=en_US to see if this resolve the issue.

You can also try extracting the msi from the installer .exe through --extract_msi and checking if the running the msi gives some more useful information.

Thanks. I am the Administrator for Account 1 so don't know why this wasn't working. I set up a new Admin account (Account 2) on my computer and ran the same installer from that account. Somehow that worked and also allowed me to install to my Account 1. However, I still can't run the program in Admin mode in Account 1.

@ssbajaj So this seems like a Windows related issue but not PowerToys.

@jaimecbernardo and @franky920920 . I think PowerToys threw off my Windowss configuration settings. I was able to fix the Windows configuration settings by following the instructions on https://thegeekpage.com/error-1625-installation-forbidden-by-system-policy/. I followed steps 1 - 4 but not 5. Not sure what step did the trick. Before pursuing the fix, I was getting the same 1625 error when trying to install Visual Studio 2019.

I really think there is a bug in the upgrade install process in PowerToys 0.45. Before trying that upgrade and receiving the error that lead me to open this thread, everything was working fine on my machine.

Thanks for your assistance with this. I really appreciate it.

Thanks for the feedback @ssbajaj .
This is helpful information in case we end up having more users with the same problem.
