Virtual environment not activated in new terminal for Zsh #22881
Comments
I'm having the same issue with Zsh and Zsh for Humans. It used to work before, but yesterday I noticed it stopped working. If I switch my terminal to Bash it works again, so I'm guessing this has to do with Zsh or Zsh for Humans. LogsPython

@JoelFeiner-viimed @MicaelJarniac Can you try the latest release version of the extension and see if it helps? A fix was recently merged in yesterday: #22872, and I wonder if that is the cause due to which pre-release is not working. |
@karrtikr It did on my side, virtual environment is now activated automatically in zsh. |
Fantastic, we'll work on publishing a fix right away. |

Closes #22881 If status changes, re-run activation. Also persist once we know shell integration works for a shell.
@norambna Thanks for trying it out, could you please provide the debug logs?

Lastly, can you also provide the following #22900 (comment)? This would help in opening the issue on VS Code's end. |
Upgraded to absolute latest pre-release and reloaded. Here are the trace-level logs: Output for

Can you open a zsh terminal outside VS Code and paste the value of |
Yes, exactly the same. Outside of VSCode:

Thanks a lot @JoelFeiner-viimed , this looks like an issue on VS Code, I can gladly assist you in opening an issue on their end. One last bit of info I need from your end, is to try #22881 (comment), reload window after installation, and provide the logs and value of |
Once you provide this info, I expect https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/terminal/shell-integration#_manual-installation to fix the issue for you. |
That does in fact fix the issue. |
Logs attached. |
What about the PATH variable, upon installation of latest stable release. |
Looks the same. |
Thanks, I assume this is from the Zsh terminal in VS Code. It actually seems different than pre-release, it doesn't seem to contain:
which tells me that automatic shell integration actually does not seem to work in your case, even though the screenshot says that it's activated. |
Note that I did that with the release version, not the pre-release. But yes, it does not appear to be working. |
Closing as duplicate of #22899, will make sure to open an issue on VS Code's end once the investigation concludes. |
Opened microsoft/vscode#205133. |
Thank you. I'm following it and will provide info as needed if they request it or if I feel something may be useful. Thanks for working on this so quickly. |
Just tried out the pre-release and it also appears to fix all issues for my zsh. Thanks for fixing this so quick! Haven't found any other issues with shell extensions and zsh, will report if I do. |

With the fix, we observe whether Python REPL is launched in Terminal via VS Code's `onDidWriteTerminalData` and send the command, or wait three seconds as a fallback mechanism. These two combined together will significantly reduce or resolve all-together the chance of very first command being swollen up or gets pasted twice in Terminal and REPL previously where it did not have context of whether Python REPL instance have started inside the Terminal or not. -------------------- Commit message for microsoft/vscode-python@a60fbd5: Add GDPR tags for new Pylance properties (microsoft/vscode-python#22922) -------------------- Commit message for microsoft/vscode-python@aff0b05: Use python debugger in testing (microsoft/vscode-python#22903) closed: microsoft/vscode-python-debugger#174 -------------------- Commit message for microsoft/vscode-python@84734a8: Updating installed extensions section of README.md (microsoft/vscode-python#22893) Adding the Python Debugger to the installed extensions section of the README. -------------------- Commit message for microsoft/vscode-python@2159238: Bump actions/setup-python from 4 to 5 in /.github/actions/build-vsix (microsoft/vscode-python#22602) Bumps [actions/setup-python](https://github.com/actions/setup-python) from 4 to 5. <details> <summary>Release notes</summary> <p><em>Sourced from <a href="https://github.com/actions/setup-python/releases">actions/setup-python's releases</a>.</em></p> <blockquote> <h2>v5.0.0</h2> <h2>What's Changed</h2> <p>In scope of this release, we update node version runtime from node16 to node20 (<a href="https://redirect.github.com/actions/setup-python/pull/772">actions/setup-python#772</a>).
