Git - Partial Git repositories cause problems in VS Code Source Control panel #246946

I'm attempting to work with this repo: https://github.com/withastro/astro
Since the repo is very large (over 11.6k commits), I chose to pull only the latest 10 commits or so. This gives me a grafted history where only the latest 10 commits from the repo are available in my system locally, and the last one shows grafted on it when viewed with git log.
I often notice that the Source Control panel in VS Code would either hang with the "loading" band moving left to right (with actions that involve viewing the diff of changes) or straight up throw errors from Git (with actions that involve history modification, like Commit (Amend) or rebase).
It seems VS Code is unable to work with grafted (partial) Git repo histories and makes the assumption that the history is always complete.
Current workaround: Execute "Reload Window" from the Command Bar, or restart VS Code.
