The welcome page is static and does not provide a lot of value. This change will stop showing the welcome page on first run experience, it will instead open a tailored welcome page in code.visualstudio.com.

Taking the welcome page out of VSCode will allow us to change it more rapidly and customized it for user needs.

The change include:

  • Remove ShowWelcomeAction from the menu and stop rendering the welcome page on first run.
  • It will reuse welcomePage env variable to supply the URL that VSCode will open on first start.
