The hugo build will fail here, since it will be pointing at the wrong theme version. It is expected.

Question: does that explain this error? (I built against the mainframe branch)

@mjang it needs the mainframe branch on documentation, and the mainframe branch from the hugo theme. I've made a preview build with thoss variables you can look at here - https://frontdoor-test-docs.nginx.com/previews/docs/bae0872/nginx-one/api/api-reference-guide/
