Initially, error is assigned state.errored, which is null.

In the event of an error on the stream object, errorEmitted will be set to true and error will be assigned the error.

That in turn, will throw and cause errorThrown to be set to true, which again assigns the error to error.

So in case of any error, won't this code not be executed because of the if (errorThrown) block above? error will still be null at this point, right? Why is this check needed?

I think the easiest way to do this is to replace:

} else if (closeEmitted) {
  break;
}

with:

} else if (closeEmitted) {
  throw new ERR_STREAM_PREMATURE_CLOSE();
}

Don't think any further changes than that is necessary.
