THEN I tried what felt like every SI Silicon Labs driver under the sun including the one that came with the manual to my ESP8266. DIDN't WORK. Tried quitting, restarting, updating java, different MicroUSB cables and followed this thread as well: #2
FINALLY here's the solution I found. The SI (cu.SLAB_USBtoUART) driver doesn't work, this one WORKS. Load it up.
sabeeh125, thanks for letting us know how much effort you have exerted.
otherwise we wouldn't know about any problems! Next time you solutions
would be more valuable
if you included any kind of controls and output information. For example,
this is not an Arduino list,
but if I were to consider your archival posting, it would be important for
me to know the revision of
your hardware, the versions of the failed images you tried, and a more
specific crash report, console,
logs, etc.
The crashy binaries you used almost certainly worked on different hardware,
but for future development,
or another user at a different time, there is not any info in your post
about the circumstance which make
your links the right choice, or any information a developer could use to
fix the problems your encountered.
although you provided the word "solution" in your post, it reads more like
a rant because there is no accountability
of your solution (the hardware revision, software revision or specific
bugs). Not sure how a developer,
or user could make effective use of your post.

Wow. this was a mission.
I'm on a Mac Sierra 10.12 with an ESP8266.
First, Arduino kept crashing.
Crash errors: nsinvalidargumentexception and
setAutomaticCustomizeTouchBarMenuItemEnabled
It took probably 10 tries of installing different versions but Arduino
keeps crashing
