You don't need this check, since variables may contain equal signs:
$ busybox | head -n1
BusyBox v1.24.2 (2016-07-08 12:03:25 PDT) multi-call binary.
$ busybox sh -c 'A=B=C; echo $A'
B=C
The current runtime-spec only talks about limits to the variable name (and even there I think the spec is too strict).

They wouldn't have happend if I'd rebased this branch on the current master before merging v1.0.0.rc1, but then I'd have to repeat the initial dance done with eac0762 (Merge commit '30e2ea2', 2016-08-02) and b45bebd (Merge commit '6acca9e', 2016-08-02).
