Button and/or shortcut for creating a parallel way, if a way is selected. In Potlatch that function is available via keyboard shortcut P.

@gittagans How would the workflow look like?

  • Create the 1st way
  • Select it
  • Use button/shortcut (duplicated parallel way is attached to cursor until click)
  • Click to place the duplicated parallel way?

Or what would be your suggestion on how to do this workflow wise?

Just like that.
Would be nice if that works for polygons too. One can easily copy polygons this way in Potlatch.

The duplicate operation (⌘C/⌘V) makes it slightly easier to divide a dual carriageway, but a true parallel way feature would still be a major improvement, because it would reduce the need to manually tweak curves.

If someone decides to work on this, check out the workflow in JOSM.

It is especially useful how JOSM shows the length of the offset in the status bar area when the lateral offset is a known measurement. In the example above, the target offset is 7.5m.

The roundabout case in #1931 (comment) is possible in iD as of #8012:

  1. Select the roundabout.
  2. Clone the roundabout (⌘C).
  3. Scale the cloned roundabout (⇧−).
  4. Retag the cloned roundabout as a curb or grass.
