Issues: Index, Create and Show page updates

GitHub Issues is evolving! 🥳

You may have seen discussion posts for exciting new features making their way to issues, such as:

• Issue types
• Sub-issues
• Advanced search (coming soon)

This new functionality is built on top of a UI rewrite of issues, which we would love your feedback on!

The aim of this rewrite was to clear up technical debt, allowing us to move faster in bringing new functionality to issues. With this in mind our goal has been parity with the existing experience. It should feel very familiar with only a few minor cosmetic tweaks.

The experiences that have been included so far in these updates are:

• The repository issues index
• The main issue body itself (what we call the 'show' page)
• The issue creation experience

The milestones, labels and /issues dashboard pages have not yet been migrated.

Are there plans to support customizing the subscription to issues? For example, here is an issue in microsoft/typescript:

Clicking on the "Customize" link leads me to this modal:

I was very confused when I landed on an issue in getsentry/spotlight and the "Customize" link was missing next to "Notifications" in the sidebar:

This appears to be because that repository is participating in this beta. This isn't particularly clear on the show page since only the issues index page has the Beta label.

@sunnyi101, I still see no evidence of this. I have filed refined-github/refined-github#7968 (comment) to work around it, but I'm not hopeful. Can you confirm that it shall remain possible via your API, at least?

@alondahari thanks! It seems that the old form-based submission is gone and it's now replaced by a custom GraphQL mutation. Will you make CUSTOM states public? https://docs.github.com/en/graphql/reference/mutations#updatesubscription

I reckon it's now impossible to simplify the UI like Refined GitHub used to do: refined-github/refined-github#7968

I kind of wish you dropped the granularity and natively implemented a simple UI like Refined GitHub. The only reason for the modal to exist is to pick closed/reopened events, and you can count how many clicks this requires (5-6) compared to the standard subscribe/unsubscribe actions (1 click)

Can you please share advance search is coming for GitHub Projects or in global search of github for issues?

Advanced search will be in three phases,

1. Repo level
2. The github.com/issues global dashboard
3. Projects

1. This loading indicator whenever changing filters or switching to open/closed issues is not obvious (took me a while to notice when clicking a link on the left side), and is causing layout shifts when it shows up.
   

2. The issue state icons are flickering whenever the filters change:

3. The open/closed issue counts are wrong on page load:

4. When the 'new issues' modal shows up, the entire page shifts on Windows/Chrome because it disables the body scrollbar (designed on a mac™)

icons are fixed. the new issue modal is still shifting the entire page due to hiding of the scrollbar. Maybe add scrollbar-gutter: stable;?

If I comment on an issue to which I'm not currently subscribed, , the button under "Notifications" on the right still says "Subscribe" even after the comment is posted. If I refresh the page, it correctly shows "Unsubscribe" (because posting the comment as subscribed me). It'd be nice if this button could update its state dynamically to reflect the actual situation. Thanks

GraphQL error: FORBIDDEN: You cannot override the issue type assigned to the template (path: createIssue) (Persisted query id: 1b60066c55f48afb1363a2c618ea4556)

(I wasn't trying to override issue type)

I don't really care one way or the other if this is how issues looks, but it's inconsistent.

Also, the beta marker takes up a whole line. Could it be moved down? As it is, there's a big white bar above the search bar.

The updates as a whole are jarring, as switching between the prs view and issues view was jarring. It looks to have been reverted now.

In this beta the border on the corners on the issue list box gets cut off—this UI is not ready for general use.

Switching between the open and closed view on the Issues view has a jarring loading state. It seems there's deferred loading on the "status" icons which changes the width ever-so-slightly

Something very strange is happening for me when trying to reply to an issue. I'm trying to reply, and tag someone in an issue and the screen is jumping all over the place. And the @ dialog to choose who to reply is never appearing.

All I do in the following video is type @brian. I never touch the trackpad, only the keyboard - and yet the screen jumps all over the place.

The automatic quote insertion doesn't work when you actually type the end quote. If I type "if", the first " will yield "<cursor>", then typing the closing " doesn't get ignored (because it was already typed), so you end up with "if"<cursor>".

It should either not do automatic quote insertion, or ignore me typing in the final " (and move the cursor to after the already inserted ", of course, yielding "if"<cursor>)

The issues overview page uses rounded relative dates, which are very short. I think this makes sense, but there's a problem with it: it abbreviated months as "m". This is super confusing, as "m" is also used for minutes (the more canonical meaning of m).
It should use some other letter like "M" or something like that.
Maybe it would make more sense to just not abbreviate it at all, which was done previously.

The former is minutes, the latter is months.

Not strictly related to the new features, but something that could be really helpful: the ability to sort issues by number of labels.

as a member of the triage group, this would be invaluable for quickly finding the issues that most urgently need triage.

Thanks so much for this work! I noticed that with the new UI, it's no longer possible to add a new label or milestone from within the issues/new view. Instead, you must navigate to the labels or milestones sections. Is that functionality returning? We use it quite a lot as part of our day-to-day workflows. thanks!

for example, when creating a diagnostics issue, most of the fields should be wrapped in code blocks, but they are not.
