Gauging the precise locations of friends is somewhat cumbersome when zoomed in with the default GMS map type. Being able to switch to a satellite or hybrid mode would be ideal in this situation.
It appears that this feature has been present in the iOS version of the app since Nov 2019, so it would be nice for this feature make its way to Android. This, in combination with #1152, #1068, and #1156, would make the user experience of zooming in and interacting with the map much smoother.
The popular family tracking app Life360 implements this rather slickly by switching to a hybrid view when zoomed in past a certain threshold. While that is a smooth implementation, a simple layers menu as is seen in most android apps would be more than sufficient.

Let me have a fiddle to see how this might best be done. I think it'd be good to give the user the option of both the available google layers and the available OSM layers as well (if they prefer OSM).
