ADPATCH Tested Games
The games in this table have been tested to work with ADPATCH.
These are not the only games that can be patched though: other games that uses the same sound engine as one of these will likely work as well. Below the table are notes on specific sound engines.
(Of course, most games will work with the TSR and won't need patching. Patching is needed if you have a 8086 or 286 CPU, because the TSR won't run on your system. It's also needed for games that use a DOS extender and run their Adlib code in "protected mode".)
Vogons user Artigkar has been collecting demo versions of patchable games: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=66024&hilit=adpatch

The Audio Interface Library (AIL) was a widely used audio engine. It was the predecessor to the well-known Miles Sound Engine.
The Adlib driver will usually be a file named something like this:
ADLIB.ADV SBFM.ADV
AILADLIB.ADV AILSBFM.ADV
A16ADLIB.DLL A16SBFM.DLL
A32ADLIB.DLL A32SBFM.DLL
A32ADLIB.DRV A32SBFM.DRV
ADLIB.MDI
(There's no meaningful difference between the Adlib and Sound Blaster FM driver. If the game doesn't offer an Adlib option, you can patch the Sound Blaster driver.)
Some games bundle drivers together in one big file. If the file is uncompressed, ADPATCH should still be able to apply the patch. Usually the file will be compressed though, in which case patching is not possible.
Some very early games and music software used Adlib's SOUND.COM
driver. The game might ship a version of this driver or it might
expect that you received a copy of the driver with your sound card.
ADPATCH can patch version 1.51 of this driver (the latest version). You can find it on the Adlib disk in the VOGONS Vintage Driver Library. If a game shipped with an older version, you can just replace it.
Patch the ADL.DRV
file and configure the game for Adlib music using
the INSTALL program. Expected output:
Applying patch: Sierra SCI Adlib output (variant xxx)
There are many variants of this driver, I think I've got patches for all of them except for a variant used in a couple of 1990 releases.
Known not to work:
- King's Quest I (EGA remake): "Patch failed"
- Sorcerian: "Patch failed"
- The Incredible Machine 2. My copy comes with the SCI drivers, but it looks like the game doesn't actually use them. Odd.
DMX was a sound engine that was most notably used in Doom. This patch only works for later versions of the engine; Doom v1.9 works, earlier versions might not.
Patch the main EXE file and configure the game for Adlib music in the SETUP program. Expected output:
Applying patch: DMX engine Adlib output (part A)
Applying patch: DMX engine Adlib output (part B)
Applying patch: DMX engine Adlib detection
"Early id Software" means anything based on the Commander Keen and Wolfenstein 3D engines. Some Apogee titles also used this code.
Patch the main EXE file (though the EXE will usually be compressed, see the note about UNP). Expected output:
Applying patch: Early id Software Adlib output
Applying patch: Early id Software Adlib check
This patch covers a couple of games published by Softdisk.
Patch the main/largest EXE file. Expected output:
Applying patch: Softdisk/Dangerous Dave Adlib output
Applying patch: Early id Software Adlib check
Note: Keen Dreams has a big "Music" option in its menu. This option doesn't do anything, the music was removed at the last minute before release to make the game fit on a 360K floppy.
WORX Toolkit was a low-budget sound engine that was used by many early 90's shareware games. ADPATCH can deal with versions 2.01 and 2.1. I haven't encountered earlier versions.
Note 1: Many of Epic's games initially used a different sound engine, but were later re-released using WORX Toolkit.
Note 2: The Skunny games seem to use WORX only for sound effects. They use different code for music.
This covers most of LucasArts' adventures and probably a few of the X-Wing games as well.
You'll need to patch the main EXE file and, if they exist, ADLIB.IMS or FM2.MDR as well.
