Warning Deprecated feature in PHP 5.4

Trying to access the index.php file via PHP 5.4.16 on Windows XP, I have :

Deprecated: Assigning the return value of new by reference is deprecated in [...]\index.php on line 5

It can be resolved by removing the '&' at the line 5 in the index.php
