Note on the above: The makes the apps UI allow for Ledger-compatible imports with the bip32+d25519 scheme Ledger applies - however, as per ZondaX's advice, the preference is to keep to the Ledger recovery so the mnemonic doesn't leave the device, this is another option but not first on the list.

This mention from ZondaX also aligns with Ledger's own advice in their documentation in the key exports sections, any input of the mnemonic from the Ledger into anything not on the Ledger is an option for compatibility, but not first prize. Like with any cold keys on signers (Parity Signer, Ledger, ...), you generally don't want to take them into hot wallets if non-transient.

(As an alternative, this is also behind https://github.com/jacogr/sample-ledger-ed25519 where you can derive on the command line, but you never have to enter the actual mnemonic into the apps UI)

TL;DR For the additional issue linked on recovery, the preferred option would be to use the ZondaX recovery app as/when made available. This exists to not get locked out without a Ledger and have the ability to recover the keys at any time to add to the wallet.
