Planning issue

We are planning a one-time migration of some previously used tags to what we now wish they were. For example:

eu --> europe
lat:foo --> latitude:foo
lng:foo --> longitude:foo
...

Additional context (optional)
Feel free to add your ideas for which currently used tags might need migration in the comments below so we can discuss! Thank you!

This is also outlined in this issue: #6367 "Revamp/deprecate tag aliasing, migrate aliases to new tags"

@steviepubliclab had suggested re-using a listing of tag aliases as much as possible rather than starting over, and there's a reference to that in the above issue, which should be helpful.

Also, lat => latitude is just an example, right? Since lat:____ is coded into many parts of the site, I suggest not changing that one, or any other widely-used powertags, unless very important.

Thanks!

re: lat and lng is this still going to be an issue if we're hiding the powertags?

Hi, I wasn't sure if lat/lon changes were a real suggestion or just an example?

lat/lng was a real suggestion by @publiclab-mimi.

@publiclab-mimi has been getting a lot of feedback from young people who do not know what the "short codes" mean, but are interested. If the full words "latitude" and "longitude" were written out, people who do not already know what these words mean could search and find out so much more and have a great introduction to geographic technology. Right now the abbreviations are so obscure that a reader is either "in the geo cool club and knows whats up" or is "in the dark with no path to learning more".

That said, if it is hard to change the short codes, we don't have to, of course.
