Towards #818. I'm opening this up early for feedback on the rendered log messages. I started with the easy thing of using Rich's logging handler. Out of the box, it feels like its intended audience is devs reading log messages, so I tweaked it a bit to be friendlier to everyday CLI users.

Code change looks pretty simple and non-invasive. I'm a 👍 if that's all it takes

Okay. I'm going to explore and maybe do some spikes to see what's involved with some of the other items in #818 (comment).

I think I’ve everything necessary to get the tests passing and support --no-color. That said, @sigmavirus24 @di, I'd appreciate a fresh review of this, because it changes how logging is configured.

I'm also curious how this might get merged and released. I think it'd be nice to have twine check use the same mechanism, but I think that's some non-trivial work, and I can imagine hitting a roadblock and deciding that Rich isn't a good fit for Twine. With that in mind, I'm inclined to push this as a feature branch to the upstream repo, and then do more PR's off that, until it feels cohesive enough to release. What do y'all think?

Feature branches don't have a high success rate in my experience. What's preventing you from pushing that feature branch today to the repository if that's the approach you want to take? You can push non-main branches to pypa/twine today. This could be exactly that. You don't need our permission here. If you then want to send PRs to that from your fork, you can do that too. In the meantime, this PR can stay open if we want or we can close it and you can iterate in that other branch

@sigmavirus24 Can you elaborate on this?

What's preventing you from pushing that feature branch today to the repository if that's the approach you want to take?

I think this is the largest user-facing change I've worked on in an open-source project, so I wanted to think through how it will get released. I think it'd be nice to do more of the items in #818 (comment) before releasing, but I also want to avoid sprawling code reviews. With that in mind, I see two approaches:

  1. Merge this PR into main. Try to get more output ported to Rich in subsequent PR's before the next release, but accept that this PR might need to be released before then (e.g. because of a bug fix).
  2. Push this branch to pypa/twine and submit incremental PR's on that until there's enough for a cohesive release.

Either way, I'd like approval of this PR before building on it. And as always, I'm open to other suggestions.

@sigmavirus24 Can you elaborate on this?

Sure thing. In my experience, I've seen people create feature branches that are intended to merge back to the default branch. For various reasons, those feature branches languish and resolving merge conflicts (either via rebase or merging the default branch back into the feature branch) becomes harder and harder. If the branch lasts long enough, these problems cause enough friction and eventually the branch is abandoned.

I think this is the largest user-facing change I've worked on in an open-source project, so I wanted to think through how it will get released

That makes sense. I think, what I'm hearing you strive for is perfection. Personally, I think that's likely to cause a feature branch to fail in the exact way I describe above.

Merge this PR into main. Try to get more output ported to Rich in subsequent PR's before the next release, but accept that this PR might need to be released before then (e.g. because of a bug fix).

I think we can merge this into main. I don't think we necessarily need to block a next release on making sure everything is using rich. I think if we happen to release things without full rich support, that's okay. If we create issues for the rest of the work, we can also allow other folks to contribute to the effort as necessary. That might also mean it lands in the next release as you wish.

I think we can merge this into main.

Thanks, @sigmavirus24. Is that an approval of this PR? Have you been able to review the recent changes?

what I'm hearing you strive for is perfection

Not exactly. While I do have perfectionist tendencies, I think I do an okay job of keeping them in check. However, I can see how a feature branch would both encourage and suffer from such tendencies.

If we create issues for the rest of the work, we can also allow other folks to contribute to the effort as necessary.

Good point. I must admit that I'm keen to see this through myself, based on the order of operation outlined in #818 (comment). But discrete issues would be useful either way.

<h2>4.10.0rc1</h2>
<h1>Release 4.10.0rc1 (February 17, 2024)</h1>

unnecessarily
introspected, potentially causing exceptions to be raised if the
protocol had
problematic members. Patch by Alex Waygood, backporting
