QOD September 2021
This month QGIS Open Day is dedicated to My QGIS. Each of us has a speciality in QGIS and our own workflows and tricks join this months QGIS Openday to learn from eachother.
Simply watch the Youtube Livestream and comment on the day, or catch the recording if you can't make the live session.
To keep up to date with QGIS Open Day events, please join the Telegram channel.
Virtual events will be taking place online (see links below) and in the links shared in the telegram group, all events are live-streamed on YouTube. See the individual event descriptions below for an indication of where to join each event.

Description: The web-based mapping of groundwater information is becoming a big trend all over the world. Many countries have excellent mapping websites, often with WMS links, some updated regularly, others stagnant. But in Southern Africa groundwater mapping websites are scarce and often outdated due to the fact that groundwater data is sitting in various databases that don't "talk to each other" and is difficult to get by. Recent drought situations have prompted various projects to bring groundwater information to the web, primarily to educate the public en encourage participation, but also to initiate sound groundwater management practices and policies by creating public-private partnerships. This presentation demonstrates some background and a few live examples of what can be done with QGIS and Lizmap to bring groundwater data to the web.

Description: Hydrological flow models are today commonly made using surface elevation sourced from LIDAR data. One big problem with this elevation data when calculating water flow is that culverts aren't represented and therefore the elevation data needs to be modified. Culverts have to be identified, digitised and "burned" into the elevation raster. Culverts are usually found along ditches and streams and these can to some degree be identified visually in the elevation raster using hillside symbology. However, if ditches and streams could be automatically identified the process of finding culverts would be easier. This presentation shows how to automatically identify ditches and streams of certain sizes and shapes using raster calculations with slope, aspect and neighbourhood analysis. The resulting raster features are then converted to polylines for further workflows to find and digitise culverts.

Description: Did you ever wonder if you can build a personal tracking platform similar to how Google tracks you but without Google tracking you? Come and join me for an informal session where I will show you how easy it is to build a platform like this using FOSS GIS. Note the presentation will use QGIS but also focus a lot on other related tools needed in the workflow.

Description: An immersion in the QGIS community, uniting people in a common feeling, making a Geoprocessing tool without borders.
You can do this too! We really encourage others to follow our initiative, using the wiki page link below to organise your plans (just add a section below the last one). You can host virtual meetups in the Jitsi room, plan your next steps to take QGIS further down the road to world domination and much much more. We encourage language and region-specific huddles, documentation improvement sessions, bug fixing, making beautiful maps, and working together to do amazing things with QGIS.
We would really love to see more events offered from our country user groups and broader user base. The content can be at any skill level and in any language you like, and the times can overlap if needed. So please feel free to organise your activities on this wiki page. The QGIS Open Day is also an ideal time to hold virtual country user group meet-ups - please share your activities on the open day schedule, so that even people from outside of your country user group can benefit from your presentations. Contact me (see below) if you need help adding your events to the wiki page.
You can spread the word! We have prepared the following materials so that you may easily copy and paste the relevant contents to publish on your media platform of choice to let others know about these awesome events.
About QGIS Open Day
Dear QGIS Users
On Friday, 24th September 2021 we will be holding our monthly QGIS Open Day! What is a QGIS Open Day you may be wondering to yourself? It is an initiative to replace the wonderful community meetups we used to hold every six months when times were different. Like our in-person meetings, the event is organised on the principle of self-organisation and community participation.
Programme
- Implementation of web-based groundwater information mapping projects with QGIS and Lizmap by Immo Blecher
- Automatic identification of ditches and streams in elevation data using raster algorithms by Jacob Levallius
- Track yaself! A case study of using OwnTracks, MQTT, Node-Red, PostGIS and QGIS to build your own personal tracking platform by Tim Sutton
Where to watch
Please see the event wiki page at QOD-September-2021 Wiki for all the details of times and links for participation.
All the events are recorded and made available to users who couldn't make the live events. Youtube live streams are automatically available for catch-up viewing. Be sure to check back here for updates!
