Hi, I'm running Gentoo with the aforementioned kernel (latest as of time of writing). It occasionally will have a problem with either the USB or the USB network card and stop talking on the network, requiring a reboot. Unfortunately I don't have much to debug from, but I will post the kernel message at the time it stopped. I can also post my .config if required. I have set "vm.min_free_kbytes = 4096" when following setup instructions (not sure if this is still required).

I see the bug report stripped all of the addresses from the call stack. Let me know if there's anything I can do to get a more useful BT, I'm comfortable modifying kernels.

@licaon-kter

afaik, vm.min_free_kbytes should be at least 8192

setting smsc95xx.turbo_mode=N in cmdline.txt helps somehow?

( both covered here: http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Troubleshooting#Crashes_occur_with_high_network_load )

@dflogeras

hmm, I tried upping the min_free_kbytes to 8192, and it still stopped working after a few days. Also, unlike most of the other reports it isn't due to high network load, and doesn't show the same kernel warnings (smsc95xx 1-1.1:1.0: eth0: kevent 2 may have been dropped). I will try again with turbo_mode=N.

@dflogeras

And with turbo_mode=N it stopped working after about a day of uptime. Could anyone suggest a way to get a decent kernel bactrace for the developers?

Same problem with cutdown, full, and locally built kernels on debian softfloat.
Network stops working consistently within 1 hour of boot.
Network load (while it is working) is near 0, dosen't seem to change based on cmdline.txt options.

I get the same "NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0 (smsc95xx): transmit queue 0 timed out" and random Ethernet outages using Arch Linux 2012-09-18.

I was previously using Raspbian 2012-09-18-wheezy which had Ethernet outages but with the message "smsc95xx 1-1.1:1.0: eth0: Failed to write register index". Raspbian also trashed my rootfs on the SD card so I switched to Arch but it evidently is having similar Ethernet problems.

I have tried two PSUs, an HTC phone charger rated at 1A, and the Nexus 7 charger rated at 2A.

The one thing that might be out of the ordinary here is that I have an FTDI USB/serial device attached and am polling it frequently. Ethernet traffic is very low.

Still having same problem with the current kernel and firmware versions, no peripherals at all except network connection. I didn't have this problem prior to commit 2843e37.

… and paravirtualize them

To allow easy paravirtualization of P_Key and GID table sizes, keep
paravirtualized sizes in mlx4_dev->caps, but save the actual physical
sizes from FW in struct: mlx4_dev->phys_cap.

In addition, in SR-IOV mode, do the following:

1. Reduce reported P_Key table size by 1.
This is done to reserve the highest P_Key index for internal use,
for declaring an invalid P_Key in P_Key paravirtualization.
We require a P_Key index which always contain an invalid P_Key
value for this purpose (i.e., one which cannot be modified by
the subnet manager). The way to do this is to reduce the
P_Key table size reported to the subnet manager by 1, so that
it will not attempt to access the P_Key at index #127.

2. Paravirtualize the GID table size to 1. Thus, each guest sees
only a single GID (at its paravirtualized index 0).

In addition, since we are paravirtualizing the GID table size to 1, we
add paravirtualization of the master GID event here (i.e., we do not
do ib_dispatch_event() for the GUID change event on the master, since
its (only) GUID never changes).

Not sure how relevant this is, but here goes:

my system is a very lightly loaded system (in terms of both CPU and network). It typically runs dnsmasq for dhcp (very light load, 1 client), ntpd, ddclient to update dynamic dns, apcupsd to monitor a battery.

Until recently I had been leaving myself signed into IRC (irssi) inside of a screen session which would be a constant, but pretty low ethernet traffic (sitting in 3-4 channels). It was typically hitting the "NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0 (smsc95xx): transmit queue 0 timed out" issue about every 2-3 days requiring a reset (network is my only access). After a month of consistent crashes like this, I have stopped leaving IRC connected 24/7, and now it seems to stay running much longer (so far, for the past 10 days without a lockup).

Thank you! I've been running a kernel with that fix (3.2.27-cutdown-g4b61ead) for the past week or so without issue. I'll keep an eye on it and close in a few weeks.

commit 2f01a33 upstream.

The ehci_init_driver is used to initialize hcd APIs for each
ehci controller driver, it is designed to be called only one time
and before driver register is called. The current design will
cause ehci_init_driver is called multiple times at probe process,
it will cause hc_driver's initialization affect current running hcd.

We run out NULL pointer dereference problem when one hcd is started
by module_init, and the other is started by otg thread at SMP platform.
The reason for this problem is ehci_init_driver will do memory copy
for current uniform hc_driver, and this memory copy will do memset (as 0)
first, so when the first hcd is running usb_add_hcd, and the second
hcd may clear the uniform hc_driver's space (at ehci_init_driver),
then the first hcd will meet NULL pointer at the same time.

Dmitry reported crashes in DCCP stack [1]

Problem here is that when I got rid of listener spinlock, I missed the
fact that DCCP stores a complex state in struct dccp_request_sock,
while TCP does not.

Since multiple cpus could access it at the same time, we need to add
protection.

Problem here is that when I got rid of listener spinlock, I missed the
fact that DCCP stores a complex state in struct dccp_request_sock,
while TCP does not.

Since multiple cpus could access it at the same time, we need to add

Dmitry reported crashes in DCCP stack [1]

Problem here is that when I got rid of listener spinlock, I missed the
fact that DCCP stores a complex state in struct dccp_request_sock,
while TCP does not.

Since multiple cpus could access it at the same time, we need to add
protection.

Yang Li has reported that drain_all_pages triggers a WARN_ON which means
that this function is called earlier than the mm_percpu_wq is
initialized on arm64 with CMA configured:

Fix this by moving the whole setup_vmstat which is an initcall right now

When syzkaller team brought us a C repro for the crash [1] that
had been reported many times in the past, I finally could find
the root cause.

If FlowLabel info is merged by fl6_merge_options(), we leave
part of the opt_space storage provided by udp/raw/l2tp with random value
in opt_space.tot_len, unless a control message was provided at sendmsg()
time.

Then ip6_setup_cork() would use this random value to perform a kzalloc()
call. Undefined behavior and crashes.

Fix is to properly set tot_len in fl6_merge_options()

At the same time, we can also avoid consuming memory and cpu cycles
to clear it, if every option is copied via a kmemdup(). This is the
change in ip6_setup_cork().

…ully

The 0day bot reports the below failure which happens occasionally, with
their randconfig testing (once every ~100 boots). The Code points at
the private pointer ->driver_data being NULL, which hints at a race of
sorts where the private driver_data descriptor has disappeared by the
time we get to run the workqueue.

So let's check that pointer before we continue with issuing the command
to the drive.

This fix is of the brown paper bag nature but considering that IDE is
long deprecated, let's do that so that random testing which happens to
enable CONFIG_IDE during randconfig builds, doesn't fail because of
this.

Besides, failing the TEST_UNIT_READY command because the drive private
data is gone is something which we could simply do anyway, to denote
that there was a problem communicating with the device.

Turns out that the program rejection from e411901 ("bpf: allow for tailcalls
in BPF subprograms for x64 JIT") is buggy since env->prog->aux->tail_call_reachable
is never true. Commit ebf7d1f ("bpf, x64: rework pro/epilogue and tailcall
handling in JIT") added a tracker into check_max_stack_depth() which propagates
the tail_call_reachable condition throughout the subprograms. This info is then
assigned to the subprogram's func[i]->aux->tail_call_reachable. However, in the
case of the rejection check upon JIT failure, env->prog->aux->tail_call_reachable
is used. func[0]->aux->tail_call_reachable which represents the main program's
information did not propagate this to the outer env->prog->aux, though. Add this
propagation into check_max_stack_depth() where it needs to belong so that the
check can be done reliably.

During testing of f263a81 ("bpf: Track subprog poke descriptors correctly

jit_subprogs() fails and tries to clean up the program to be run under the
interpreter, we ran into the following freeze:

This error is because root_device_name is truncated in prepare_namespace() from
being "/dev/root" to be "root" prior to call to mount_nodev_root().

As a solution, don't treat errors in mount_nodev_root() as errors that
require panics and allow failback to the mount flow that existed before
patch citied in Fixes tag.

memset() description in ISO/IEC 9899:1999 (and elsewhere) says:

The memset function copies the value of c (converted to an
unsigned char) into each of the first n characters of the
	object pointed to by s.

The kernel's arm32 memset does not cast c to unsigned char. This results
in the following code to produce erroneous output:

	char a[128];
	memset(a, -128, sizeof(a));

This is because gcc will generally emit the following code before
it calls memset() :

	mov r0, r7
	mvn r1, #127 ; 0x7f
	bl 00000000 <memset>

r1 ends up with 0xffffff80 before being used by memset() and the
'a' array will have -128 once in every four bytes while the other
bytes will be set incorrectly to -1 like this (printing the first
8 bytes) :

	test_module: -128 -1 -1 -1
	test_module: -1 -1 -1 -128

The change here is to 'and' r1 with 255 before it is used.
