Removal of NWFPE in its entirety, and VFP emulation code #269
Comments
Not sure. We do have VFP, but I don't know if we fall back to VFP emulation for any operations. |
My understanding is that this code is irrelevant on modern ARM abis. Indeed, we don't build it in any of our kernels. (Edit: I should wait till morning to reply to these things. I missed that vfp emulation was included as well as NWFPE). |
From what I can tell, the only way this might affect the Raspberry Pi is that it might break building the kernel with a softfloat toolchain. |
I've just looked into the particulars of this; it WILL break any softfloat distros, and will probably break some hardfloat programs as well (Golang inparticular comes to mind). From what I can tell, our options are either:
1 of course requires that we can find someone who has the required knowledge to write such code, but has no experience with the existing code. This is yet another example of why I will never use the GPL unless I absolutely have to. |
In reality, we don't update to this version of kernel unless it works. |
I think this issue really just needs a lawyer to look at the indemnification options and advise John appropriately. Every commonly used license (MIT, Apache etc) have a clause about no warranty being implied. If they don't have the effect that John wants, an analysis of this would make an interesting read. I suspect the major sticking point on SoftFloat is "USE OF THIS SOFTWARE IS RESTRICTED TO PERSONS AND ORGANIZATIONS WHO..." (http://www.jhauser.us/arithmetic/SoftFloat-2b/README.txt). As a non-lawyer, it's not clear to me how John Hauser's intent isn't satisfied by the text in something like the MIT license (3rd paragraph) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIT_License#License_terms |
It's certainly an interesting thread, and there is much to be learnt from it, in many ways. However, as the last message: http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/linux-arm-kernel/2013-April/163904.html makes clear, nothing is going to happen. |
Indeed, the issue has been resolved happily upstream (QEMU I believe were also affected, and reverted to a previous version of NWFPE). Closing. |
For tests that are using the maximal number of BPF instruction, each run takes 20 usec. Looping 10,000 times on them totals 200 ms, which is bad when the loop is not preemptible. test_bpf: #264 BPF_MAXINSNS: Call heavy transformations jited:1 19248 18548 PASS test_bpf: #269 BPF_MAXINSNS: ld_abs+get_processor_id jited:1 20896 PASS Lets divide by ten the number of iterations, so that max latency is 20ms. We could use need_resched() to break the loop earlier if we believe 20 ms is too much. Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <edumazet@google.com> Signed-off-by: Daniel Borkmann <daniel@iogearbox.net>

Add a new test case which performs double query of the bpf_mprog through libbpf API, but also via raw bpf(2) syscall. This is testing to gather first the count and then in a subsequent probe the full information with the program array without clearing passed structs in between. # ./vmtest.sh -- ./test_progs -t tc_opts [...] ./test_progs -t tc_opts [ 1.398818] tsc: Refined TSC clocksource calibration: 3407.999 MHz [ 1.400263] clocksource: tsc: mask: 0xffffffffffffffff max_cycles: 0x311fd336761, max_idle_ns: 440795243819 ns [ 1.402734] clocksource: Switched to clocksource tsc [ 1.426639] bpf_testmod: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel. Add a new test case to query on an empty bpf_mprog and pass the revision directly into expected_revision for attachment to assert that this does succeed. ./test_progs -t tc_opts [ 1.406778] tsc: Refined TSC clocksource calibration: 3407.990 MHz [ 1.408863] clocksource: tsc: mask: 0xffffffffffffffff max_cycles: 0x311fcaf6eb0, max_idle_ns: 440795321766 ns [ 1.412419] clocksource: Switched to clocksource tsc [ 1.428671] bpf_testmod: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel.
