Authentic ping, fix re-evaluation issue

This release:

• fixes a re-evaluation issue that caused an infinite loop on mode reactivation (by @csanchezdll, fixing #19 and #23)
• adds a proper, authentic ping (by @joeheyming, fixing #10)
