MicCheck is a lightweight macOS menu-bar app for monitoring and recording microphone input with a live visualizer and quick playback controls.
- Menu bar status item with popover UI and live audio level visualizer
- Press-and-hold on the menu bar icon to start recording; release to stop
- Pick an input device, monitor levels, and record from the selected mic
- Recording list with inline play/pause and delete; "Clear All" to purge quickly
- Settings for press-and-hold delay, optional Dock icon hiding, max recording length, and custom recordings folder
- Short click menu bar icon → open/close the MicCheck popover
- Press and hold menu bar icon → start recording immediately; release to stop
- Inside the popover: choose input, record/stop, play/delete recordings, open Settings
- MicCheck needs microphone access. If you see “Mic access is disabled,” enable it in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
- Popover shows no audio: verify the correct input device is selected and mic permission is granted
- Gatekeeper block: right-click → Open (first launch) or remove quarantine with
xattr -cr /Applications/MicCheck.app - Custom recordings folder issues: re-pick the folder in Settings to refresh the security-scoped bookmark
