TypeScript now defaults to
unknownfor exception types, rather thanany, so I had to add a few type assertions onto caught exceptions (sadly, you can't give exceptions explicit types in TypeScript, because apparently in JavaScript any old object can be thrown 🤦. Further discussion here).
