Adding Disks

Hi,

I would like to add a disk for longhorn, it seemed to be simply adding a few lines to machineconfig:

machine:
  disks:
    - device: /dev/sdb
      partitions:
        - mountpoint: /var/mnt/storage

But this fails, talos does not boot successfully and I can see lines like this:

[talos] volume status {"component": "controller-runtime", "controller": "block.volumeManagerController","volume": "/dev/sdb-1", "phase": "failed -> failed", "error": "no disks matched for volume"}

what am I missing?

• talos 1.8.3 with Hetzner Cloud Server Image
• without the disks part I can see it's really /dev/sdb

Whenever you hit an issue, please submit talosctl support bundle

I try, but I think talosctl was not working anymore.. I had to open the console to see whats happening.

The most common case might be that /dev/sdb might be a Talos system disk, but it's very hard to guess without any data.

Talos with attached 10G volume as /dev/sdb, not configured for talos

with configuration as above: bootstrap hangs, "bootstrap request received" and the mentioned volume status messages are scrolling in the dashboard.

I'll try with adding the disks config after successful start later.

in your case, /dev/sdb is not empty - it is xfs filesystem on the raw block device (you can check yourself with taloctl get dv), so it can't be used a user disk

ok, that was a bit stupid. I tested it without FS, but after initial setup only. 🙈

bootstrapping with disks worked:

10.1.0.2   /dev/sdb1    10.67      0.24       10.43           2.23%          /var/mnt/storage
