Broken Budgie keyboard indicator settings and missing Chinese popups after Ibus installation #729

Operating System: Solus 1.2.1 Solus 2017.04.18.0
Budgie version: Budgie 10.2.8 Budgie 10.3.1
Follow up: https://dev.solus-project.com/T1573

The issues encountered:

  1. After having installed Ibus, the Budgie keyboard indicator settings are messed up. Switching between de and us doesn't work anymore. Switching to zh_CN shows Chinese characters when I type, however, without the popup which is present when having the Ibus indicator activated in the system tray. Lastly, why not rename zh_CN to cn?

Steps to reproduce the issue:
Install Chinese (libpinyin), English, and German language support.

Popups also don't show when typing with libpinyin. Maybe the problem is that I am trying to add libpinyin to the keyboard layout indicator and the gnome settings mix the two together when in fact they should be separated?

I think this screenshot illustrates better what I mean with missing popups when typing in Chinese. This is a critical bug for me as I currently cannot use Budgie for lots of Chinese-related work.

I have the same issue, but I can enter the Chinese characters in the budgie applications themselves (e.g. the Software Center). I cannot do so for any other application (e.g. LibreOffice or gedit).

By the way, I am using Solus:
uname -a
Linux sol 4.8.15 #1 SMP Sun Jan 1 17:15:40 UTC 2017 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I can confirm that the above-mentioned two independent issues are still present: German keyboard layout and Chinese popups/tooltips don't work.

I also encountered this issue on Ubuntu Budgie 17.04.
I found the Hanja (ideograms) selector popup for Korean (ibus-hangul) doesn't show up either.

Instead, I've found ibus-daemon -r -d command is a nice workaround.
Thanks to a comment in the Solus forum.

I hope this information will help for completely fixing this issue.

This reverts commit c2969d6.

The system tray will appear even when there is only one keyboard layout. Incredibly frustrating and it sticks out like a sore thumb. Until that changes, keep it disabled.
