[UX] Fixed tab width option removed

In the most recent update (2025.37) an option was removed to configure the size of tabs (fixed tab width, link to commit that removes the option).

Is there a motivating factor why this option has been removed? I personally prefered working with non-fixed tab widths, especially since the fixed tab width adds a lot of unnecessary whitespace to the tabs. For reference: I (and most of my colleagues) use short folder names on our filesystem in which we keep repositories (e.g. dev, 102, ...). The size of the tab is at least double the size of the name because of this change.

I always had it switched on, because I have some folders that have long names, and I don't want to see them truncated.

Also, when it's switched on, it uses the horizontal space more efficiently, with a mixture of long tabs and short tabs, which use less space overall.

Bacause there are lots of ways to switch between tabs. And some of my friends advice to remove this feature because it is very rare in the system-level design languages of various platforms.

Just as an extra point: in VSCode the tab size of opened files matches the length of the filename. I'm personally more in favour of following this behaviour (or adding the option to enable/disable fixed tab widths back). Either way it's only a minor remark, it won't stop me from using sourcegit at all 🙂. I'll let you decide @love-linger which option is the best fit for the application.

Tips: you can give each repository a friendly name (not renaming the folder in disk) if the repository's original folder name is too long.

Is it possible to add the feature back in please? If it's not causing any bugs, then I don't understand why this useful feature was removed.

• Many popular developer products support variable-length tabs. Examples include Visual Studio Code and all the JetBrains products (IntelliJ IDEA, Android Studio, PyCharm, and so on).

• Other popular products have large tabs by default, which use the entire horizontal space. Examples are SourceTree for MacOS, Fork Git Client.

I think SourceGit should try to use the same behavior as any of these examples, or provide an option to configure the tab sizes.
