- Lights were most compelling when they were attached to the player or the mouse and the user could move them around a lot
- Enemies spawn in the dark
- Single screen rooms in a level (like Zelda)
- Light puzzles

- Lights that act as area of effect buffs - speed light, attack power light, slow enemy light
- Lights that erode barriers or walls
- Lights that grow plants/parts of the level
- Weapons made of light - laser beam, bullets that are tiny lights
- Lights that "fix" a changing level design. Rooms randomly change until you light a torch in the center of the room.
- Levels only exist in lit areas (like closure)
- Level composed of rooms. Start zoomed in so that you can only see one room on screen. With each room you complete, the camera zooms out, revealing more of the maze.
- Light charging mechanic. Explore a random map that has charging stations in rooms scattered through the map.
- Enemies as moths
- Light that is on a rail track and constantly moves
- Only able to walk in lit areas
- Colored light blending puzzle
- Enemy types that are affected differently by colored lights - e.g. red lights that repel red enemies
- Multiple characters
- Unlimited ammo
- Light revealing mechanic - ultraviolet light shows passages
- Light shrinks while you move, but doesn't when you are stationary
- Light tower defense with towers that are designed to drastically change lighting. E.g. a lighthouse tower, a tower that turns on/off at intervals
- Light as an obstacle to enemies
- Dig through walls
- Turn-based rouge-like models (Crypt of the NecroDancer, Super-W-Hack!)
- Rogue-like dungeon exploration, player has a light that doesn't diminish w/ limited radius, player can activate lanterns w/ different colors in each room, different colors do different things (enemies are weak/strong to them, reveal chests/doors/passageways, etc.), lights can be combined to some effect
