Make date formats clearer #123

Dates are a little unclear on axes. For a start, we should not have axis labels where there isn't data (i.e. if it's yearly, having monthly labels is unnecessary). Perhaps we could add a format string in the metadata for the axis label?

Plotly is clever about all this. Resolves #123
