Non-goal to differentiate between in/on for places based on the name alone #21

Based on the name of a place alone, it may be tempting to provide different default prepositions in front of named entities, like place names. In several languages, including French and Finnish, you may want to use these 2 different prepositions. Here are 2 equivalent English examples.

  1. The place is on Hawaii
  2. The place is in California

Several languages use different prepositions depending on whether the place is an island or not. I'm advocating to not make this a goal to support.

Take the place called "Rhodes". There are multiple places called Rhodes. Some are landlocked cities and one is an island. I say that we leave it to the message author to split a message based on whether it's an island or not, and the message author can switch to the desired message depending on whether it knows that an island is being referenced.
