Steps to Upload the Excel template

Create Excel Template document using the necessary tokens. (Sample 'template.xlsx' provided).
Navigate to Administrator -> CiviContribute -> Mail Merge
Give a name for the template in 'Template Title' field.
Upload the Excel file
Select 'MS Excel Mail Merge' in the Actions drop down, tick the enable checkbox and click submit.

Steps to perform the mail merge with MS Excel

Navigate to contributions -> find contribution
Select the contribution
Select 'MS Excel Mail Merge' in the action drop down.
select the template and click print
