next is avoiding to open too many files when merging, better progress log, gzipping the temporary GAFs, finding out how to not convert back and forth string-nodeid, better arg to adjust memory

Description
This pulls in @jmonlong's GAF indexing machinery.
We should wait for htslib to take samtools/htslib#1759 first, unless we want to maintain a fork of htslib again.
