Luacheck is a tool for static analysis of Lua code. In contrast to luac which only flags syntax errors, this checker detects code smells, so you probably want to enable both when available.

Here are some sensible options:

let g:syntastic_check_on_open = 1
let g:syntastic_lua_checkers = ["luac", "luacheck"]
let g:syntastic_lua_luacheck_args = "--no-unused-args"
