WLED rebooting every 15-30m until I cleared the mDNS field (disabling it) #5336

What happened?

My two WLED lamps have started rebooting on their own every 15-30 minutes. Swapping the power supplies and adding a capacitor didn't make a difference.

To Reproduce Bug

  • Firmware: v0.15.3
  • Build 2508020
  • Free heap: 179.4 kB
  • CPU clock: 240 MHz
  • Flash size: 4 MB
  • Filesystem: 40/983 kB (4%)
  • Environment: esp32 v3.3.6-16-gcc5440f6a2 (0)
  • Hardware: ESP32-WROOM-32D
  • Wifi environment: Ubiquiti Pro AP 6E
  • Used with HA + WLED integration

Detail: My two WLED lamps have recently started rebooting every 15-30m. After some searching, I found people claiming that clearing the mDNS field in Config -> Wifi cure the rebooting. I tested and this seemed to be the fix.

The correlation seems to be that I recently setup a Matter server and Thread Border Router to use with HA and paired about 9 devices to it. I assume Matter/Thread is mDNS heavy and this seems to crash WLED or causes these reboots.

During the process of elimination, I installed the most recent 0.14.x firmware onto the ESP32 but it was still rebooting all the same, so I updated them both back to 0.15.3. Next, I cleared the mDNS field from one of the WLED lamps and so far it's been up for 1h 30m and counting. The other one is still rebooting every 15-30 minutes. This appears to be the fix.

Expected Behavior

WLED shouldn't reboot on its own.

Install Method

Binary from WLED.me

What version of WLED?

WLED 0.15.3 Build 2508020

Which microcontroller/board are you seeing the problem on?

ESP32-WROOM-32D

Relevant log/trace output

Anything else?

The fix (for now) is to just disable mDNS.
