6-02 Sample treatment (new codelist) #112
Comments
To make it easier to look at the table coming from OSCAR click here (note that name, definition, notation are not in the usual order). |
05.11.2019: finally accepted in teleconference. |
Reopening issue, because this amendment was not included in the previous FT cycle. |
This issue depends on #173 as described in the WG ACV wiki page https://github.com/wmo-im/wmds/wiki/wg-acv and needs a review. |
"Chemical denuding" is an important pre-treatment and needs to be clearly distinguish from thermal denuding. There is already a "heating" pre-treatment listed; I think that would cover "thermal-decomposing", or "thermal denuding". Other pre-treatments include cyclones and impactors to eliminate coarse particles, so maybe "particle removal" could cover filtering, cyclones, impactors, and electrostatic or diffusional removal (e.g., precipitators and diffusion batteries) with one term. |
Agree with @CharlesBrock. "Heating" would cover thermal-decomposing or thermal denuding. "Chemical denuding" is a better term. What about "chemical conversion" or "conversion", like NO2 converted to NO or NOy thermal-catalytically converted to NO? |
Branch updated |
I think the codelist is ready |
I recommend to promote this issue to 'validated' |
Found one typo: "from the ssmaple" in description of "particleRemoval". I see the word "denudation" is different from "denude" or "denuding" . Chemical denuding is often used to strip certain species. Other comments? |

Denuding. I don’t think “denudation” is a word that I have ever seen used.

Typo not present in branch.

Native-speakers, please come forward and decide ...

What about changing the "denuding" description to: "Process to strip certain chemical(s) from the sample before analysis"? @charlesabrock @jbnowak-larc comments? |
“Process to remove selected gas-phase constituents from the sample before analysis”?

Agree with Chuck's change. |
I agree with @charlesabrock I've never heard anyone use denudation in atmospheric or aerosol sciences. It is used to describe geological processes which is where @gaochen-larc question came from. I think it should be denuding and chemical denuding. I've always understood chemical denuding as removing certain gas-phase species from the aerosol, which as previously defined is gas + particle phase, while leaving the particle phase undisturbed to be collected by filter or analyzed by another technique. I think @gaochen-larc suggestion "Process to strip certain chemical(s) from the sample before analysis" should be changed to "Process to remove certain gas phase species from sample before analysis". |
And @charlesabrock already suggested this while I was typing so I agree with him. |
I agree with both @charlesabrock and @jbnowak-larc |
Denudation changed to denuding, description updated. |
