Installing beta releases

nero120 edited this page Nov 30, 2021 · 5 revisions

Beta releases are builds for an upcoming release that are not 100% finished, but they can contain bug fixes and new features so you may wish to install them to see what's new. You can find them on the xBrowserSync app releases page here on GitHub labelled as pre-release.

Important: Do not use your "live" sync ID with a beta release, create a new sync after installing the beta. If you wish to have your existing bookmarks simply restore from a previous backup.

Beta release list release packages for each platform:

  • xbrowsersync_X.X.X-beta.X_android.apk: Android app package
  • xbrowsersync_X.X.X-beta.X_chromium.zip: Chromium web extension package
  • xbrowsersync_X.X.X-beta.X_firefox.xpi: Firefox Add-on package

Installing a beta release is not the same process as with the current "live" release and differs for each platform:

Chromium (Chrome/Brave/Edge)

Download the Chromium zip file, then browse to the Extensions page (chrome://extensions will take you there for any chromium browser) and enable the "Developer mode" toggle switch. Then simply drag the Chromium zip file onto the Extensions page to install it.

Firefox

Download the Firefox xpi file. This package is not signed and so can only be loaded as a "temporary" Add-on, this means that the Add-on will be removed when you close Firefox so you'll need to repeat the installation process the next time your start Firefox. Browse to about:debugging and select "This Firefox" in the left-hand menu. Click the "Load temporary Add-on..." button and select the Firefox xpi file (see here for a video).

Android

Download the Android apk file to your Android device and then open the file to install it.
