Select text formatting before writing

Expected behavior:
After clicking on the bold button, the text written after this action is formatted accordingly (bold).

Actual behavior:
When clicking on 'bold' there is no effect (without highlighted text).
The same also applies to italic, underline, fill colour or text colour.

Additional Info:
In Firefox, formatting works, but the space before the formatting is removed.
In Microsoft Edge it behaves like in Chrome.
