Since this morning I have not been able to play any videos in SmartTube. Instead I get an "Unknown source error Response code: 403" every time I click on a video on the Home screen.

The Home screen looks normal otherwise.

I'm on a Sony TV.

ETA: I've tried restarting TV as well as signing out of SmartTube then back in again, did not help. Problem also persisted after I updated to version 22.35.

Update: Problem seems to have been resolved for at least a couple of us.

Getting the same thing on FireTV stick, no videos are working.

Update: I did two things:

  1. Re-enable the YouTube app (I had disabled it a long time ago)

  2. Exit the SmartTube app (via the Back button on my remote) then reopen it

Now the videos are playing normally, even after I disabled YouTube again. I don't know which of the above two steps made the difference.

Yep mine was fine until 5 minutes ago, now every video gives this error, apart from livestreams. (Fire tv 4k)

I just left a video open for half an hour until it started by itself and now they all work again.

WORKAROUND

Close it.
Clear the app cache and data.
Open it.
DO NOT RESTORE A BACKUP.

Warning. When you clear your data, you will also reset all of your preferences. It will also remove any of your sidebar channels that were created. It will be like running SmartTube for the "first time". However, this does fix the "error 403" until an update is released.

Clearing data and cache did not work for me. I simply uninstalled v22.35 and installed v22.19. It now works. I also tried v22.20 beta but that didn't work. This is on a Firestick 4K.

I believe version 22.19 is what I had until I checked for an updated version, which then took me to the most recent version. I can say that on my Fire Stick, both versions threw the 403 error. Maybe that means simply uninstalling and reinstalling would work?

I also wonder if those on the later version of SYT could backup your settings to the cloud -- the new setting to save to Google Drive -- and restore those settings after the next SYT update.

Either way, I'm not risking the effort I've put into my very specific setup, so I'll happily await the next update. By the way, YT is also throwing up ad blocker blocks in the web version of regular YT.

Same here on my main Google TV device, but my other Android devices running SmartTube were not affected. Stopping/updating/rebooting/clearing cache/logging out-in did not work, but clearing all data and settings fixed it.

Just installed the latest update, 22.59 on Firestick. Now have the 403 error back again. Will see if I can go back a version as that was ok yesterday.

Just use the stable version until the beta version is fixed.

Just tried that, 22.44. Has the same issue for me as the latest beta.

I said use the stable version, not the beta version xD

The new beta works for me on android TV 7.0 with default and cronet engines, but not with okhttp, completely opposed to stable version.

(Android TV 7.0, smarttube stable, tunnelled playing disabled) now only cronet is working, the other 2 shows error 403.

If (when) it breaks, try cronet and set preset to 1080p60 with AVC codec.

richaardvark commented Jul 25, 2024

I was able to solve the issue for myself. I was using an older version of the beta but updated to the newest stable and deleted all of the data and logged in again and it was still saying 403. I tried seeking forward and backwards with the right and left buttons on my remote control once a video was playing and I was getting the 403 error and that got it to think for a moment and then it loaded the actual video and now I'm having no problems whatsoever.

This is on a TCL television running Google TV.

@lokesh500

Go to settings ----> Video Player ---> Network Stack
Then choose Cronet or Default. Whichever works.
Try this and it might start working.

You're assuming we're all using the same device as you. I'm on a Sony Google TV and there's no way to downgrade to a prior version other than to side load. Not gonna go thru the hassle of that unless it's verified that the stable version works fine.

Thanks brother its work for me love you bro ❤️👍

Yup, 22.77 Im getting 403 on Shield. If you just wait a few moments, the error will go away and the video is watchable.
I should note, when I got 403 errors before, 4K video was not supported, but it is working fine at the moment.

@barney2024

New Fix is Out Smartube V22.79
but it is not on Github that i see yet
just use Latest Smartube V22.74 then once its open on Fire Stick select Notifications
Then it will ask you to install V22.79 with Error 403 Fixed
you will have to goto Cog wheel settings MY Fire TV > Devoloper Options and Allow SmartYoutube [ YES ]
Then install new Version V22.79
once thats done Enjoy watching with no Error 403 messages

Hope this was useful to someone ??

I started getting a few 403s, but the videos would play after about 3-4 attempts (just waiting), and I hadn't updated for a while, since it was working with a paid YT account. I did one update, and it still happened, and then the last remaining one and it's fine so far. Odd that it was working fine with a paid account for so long and then played up (without updating).

I've been getting an unknown source error response code 404 with about two weeks and it's always worked after about a minute.

This evening it's throwing the 404 (not 403 it hasn't been a 403 error with over two weeks) and I've left it trying to play the videos for a few minutes but it's not succeeding.

I have v23.10 of smart tube installed.

I'm using version 23.10. it seems that only a few YouTube videos are throwing the 404 error this evening. Most videos are working but a few completely refuse to play.

@mailinglists35

the clear data did not work for me. what it did work, was I checked for updates inside the app, and the changelog update said something about 403 errors. I allowed the app to install apps, then updated from the app itself. after that, it plays normally. android 9 and latest update shown today

do not forget to drop it's permissions to install apps after you update it.
