Configuring sharing

Sharing

To share files, click the 'Share' button at the top left of the OneSwarm interface.

This will display the following:

There are two ways to share files:

  • Manually (as shown above) allows you to specify individual files, directories, or a group of files and directories to be shared
  • Automatically sharing files with friends by monitoring specific directories.

We'll describe the options for manual sharing first.

Manual sharing

The 'File', 'Directory', and 'Multiple files or directories' buttons indicate which type of swarm you'd like to create. Clicking the 'Choose file' (or 'Choose directory') button specifies which file or directory to share. By default, files are shared with friends only (shown above), but you can set visibility for specific friends by clicking the 'Advanced visibility' button. For more info, see configuring visibility, below.

If you want to share a torrent publicly with existing BitTorrent users (by distributing the .torrent file), click the 'Share publicly' checkbox and specify a tracker.

Automatic sharing

Automatic sharing monitors specific directories on your computer for new files and automatically creates swarms when new files are added, sharing new swarms with friends only. To add new directory to monitor, click the 'Add' button.

You can automatically share data with OneSwarm in two ways:

  • Everything shares every file and directory in the specified watch directory, regardless of size, type, or depth.
  • Grouped media files only attempts to intelligently group files in the watch directory according to type and includes specific file types only. For instance, a directory filled with audio files will grouped into a single swarm. This option also ignores small files and those that are don't have media file types (for example, .doc files).

Visibility

By default, OneSwarm shares files with all of your friends. To change the visibility of a swarm before creating it, click the 'Manage visibility' button (shown above). To change the visibility of a swarm after it has been created or downloaded, select the 'Manage visibility' option from the 'More actions...' menu after selecting the swarm.

This displays the following window.

The left hand list (Sharing with) lists the groups for which swarm will be visible. A list of remaining users and friends is shown at right.
